Clinicopathological profile of prostate cancer at a tertiary institution in Trinidad

Objectives: To examine the cross sectional clinical and pathological profile of prostate biopsies of all patients attending the Port of Spain General Hospital over a period of 1 year from January 2020 to January 2021.

Methodology: This project took place at the Port of Spain General Hospital (POSGH) in Trinidad & Tobago. The database of all men who have had prostate biopsies at POSGH from January 2020 to January 2021 will be analysed using the prostate biopsy results of the Urology and Pathology Departments. Data was analysed using SPSS and chi squared testing.

Results: From January 2020 to January 2021, data for ninety-nine (99) prostate biopsies were verified. There were 76 (76.7%) patients identified as positive for prostate cancer. Afro Trinidadians accounted for 94.7% of all patients with prostate cancer with the majority of cases 54 (76.4%) being risk stratified as high risk on the D Amico classification.

Conclusion: This study, the first of its kind to examine the demographic of Trinidadians served at the POSGH demonstrates an above average incidence of prostate cancer with Afro-Trinidadians significantly comprising the majority of patients and were also at increased risk for high-risk disease.
