A Palladium-catalyzed C−H acyloxylation of azobenzenes enabling the regioselective introduction of the double-functionalized phophonoacetate motif was developed. The method proved tolerant for a wide range of substituents. Chemoselective hydrolysis of the diethylphosphonate function leads to a water-soluble azobenzene with interesting photophysical properties, holding great promise for the design of water-soluble photochemical tools for future biological applications.
