The film begins in Kew Gardens, UK, with Sheldrake rummaging among the shelves of the fungarium, where — with the help of Kew’s collection team — he uncovers treasures such as specimens collected by Darwin from Tierra del Fuego. From here, we are transported down the lens of a microscope into the tangled world of hyphae and mycelia, whose growth is shown in glorious high-resolution time lapse and envelopes the screen and the viewer in a clouded web of white strings. Our off-screen narrator through these sections is musician and artist Bjӧrk, whose characteristic Icelandic voice quietly guides us through facts about how fungi go about their lives and what makes them different from plants and animals.

Next, we are on the forest floor, as mushrooms of all forms inflate around the screen, from the more familiar umbrella shapes to alien-like devil’s fingers. Hours of growth are condensed into seconds by fungal filmmakers S. Axford and W. van Egmond, and the immersive experience of 3D IMAX makes it feel like mushrooms are bursting out of the screen towards the audience — as if we are insect-sized viewers in the undergrowth. This otherworldly effect is only heightened by the gentle musical score that brushes throughout the film, courtesy of composer P. Burbrook de Vere.
